For my sound sample composition I would like to (try) to make a sound composition similar to that of John Cages. Within my sound composition I would like to “tell a story” throughout my project by adding musical elements such as Rhythm, Sampling, and Reverbing. Similar to a short story I would like to integrate an intro, mid section, and conclusion within my composition, I will accomplish this by utilizing different rhythm schemes and measures. Utilizing different speeds, rhythm and tempo, I will develop a plot throughout my composition. Through layering and reverbing the ten samples used throughout my composition, I will be able to develop numerous alterations of the original sounds utilizing filters and effects. Within the introduction of my composition I will utilize light layering with build ups within the samples, leading into faster tempo, heavily layered samples with numerous filters and effects, finally concluding with a fading outro consisting of lighter laying with less effects and filters. Similar to the compositions of John Cage, I will utilize randomness within my sampling to build the platform for my composition. To build depth and emphasize the beginning, middle, and end of my composition I will heavily incorporate builds and fades within individual samples. Utilizing longer samples as quieter, base layers of my composition, I will layer shorter louder samples above to build elements of a chorus and verse through using only samples. Overall, I would like to build a composition similar to that of John Cages, while integrating elements of musical strategy within my project.
