With my Zine I would like to illustrate the concept of mental illness in a contemporary manner. I am going to utilize line work, texture, and shade with the absence of color to display the numerous “faces” and “places” of mental illness. I am going to use color to highlight background elements to display emotion through vibrancy and tonality within the background. Utilizing darker shades as the majority color in the background, I am going to use the absence of color to depict faces and scenarios of different mental illnesses. I am also going to use color (mostly black, white, and red, blue) to highlight subject matter and integrate into text. I am going to integrate text in a caption form. I am planning on titling my project “state of mind” in regards to the mentally oriented concept I will be portraying. One of the largest influences and references is the famous tattoo Mo Ganji. Originally from Berlin, Mo Ganju utilizes a minimalist style to portray elaborate work of what would be intricate images using minimal line work. Using Mo Ganjis work as a reference, I am going to use a minimalist, line work style to illustrate various faces of individuals enduring mental illnesses. For the topic and subject of each slide I will be using the six most common mental disorders in the United States today: Anxiety (panic attacks, OCD, and Phobias), Depression (Bi Polar disorder), Eating disorders (Anorexia, Bulimia), Personality disorders (multi personality disorders, dissociative personality disorder), Post Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD), Psychotic disorders (Schizophrenia). I am going to portray the symptoms and impacts of each mental disorder through varying line work and color to capture the “emotion” correlated with the mental disorder.
